Goals of 4-H Global Education

The ultimate objective of 4-H global education programming is
“peace through understanding.

Global education will encourage individuals to:

  • Realize the importance of caring about how different countries and people of the world interrelate.
  • Develop positive global attitudes and skills that enhance mutual understanding and acceptance.
  • Appreciate the similarities and differences within their own family, and between U.S. families and families around the world.
  • Assume their global citizenship responsibilities in today’s interdependent world.
  • Global education will also provide learning experiences through which individuals:
  • Develop a more accurate understanding of their values and ways of life.
  • Increase acceptance and appreciation of people from other ethnic, social and economic backgrounds within the United States.
  • Build constructive communications among different ethnic, social and economic groups within the United States.

Hosting Inbound Students

Idaho families may host summer exchange students ages 12-19 from Costa Rica or Japan for one month during the summer.

Idaho has committed to hosting the following
international students during summer 2010:

  • Japanese youths ages 12 - 18 will visit Idaho from July 22 to August 18. They are members of one of three Japanese organizations devoted to the study of foreign cultures and languages, and the benefits of international exchange. Youth delegates are placed in homes with a host sibling of the same gender and similar age.
  • Costa Rican youths ages 15-18 will visit the U.S. from June 20 to July 17. They are members of 4-S (4-H) clubs in Costa Rica. Youth delegates are placed in homes with a host sibling of the same gender and similar age.

For Host Family Information, click here. For a summer 2010 Host Family Application, click here. (Note that the application is an interactive pdf form which you may complete on your computer and print out. You may also print out the blank form and fill it in by hand.)

Families may also host year-long exchange students ages 15-18 from the former Soviet republics in Eurasia. Students have good English skills, and their own medical insurance and spending money. A family need only provide a bed (in a shared or single room), food, and open hearts. Host families for year-long students need not have a child of the same age in the home. For information on hosting for a school year, contact Claudine Zender at  4hinternational@uidaho.edu.
