Choosing a 4-H Project

Projects
In 4-H, youth "learn by doing." Much of that learning happens through project experiences. Idaho 4-H offers projects in 8 subject matter ares. 4-H projects are designed to appeal to the wide range on interests of today's young people. In addition to learning subject-matter skills, youth can develop interests that last a lifetime.

How to select a 4-H project
There is so much to do in 4-H. It can be very confusing when you need to decidie what 4-H project you want to take. Here are some tips to think about while making that project decision:

  • Select a subject you like are or have an interest
  • Consider the money it will take. Can parents/guardians help?
  • Consider the space and equipment that you have at home
  • Will your parents or guardian be able to provide support  for the project
  • Be aware of the opportunities for growth in the project
  • Choose a project that you have time to complete. Some projects may take a full year to complete, while others can be completed in a few weeks.
  • A 4-H project should be fun, serve a purpose, and be worth the effort.
  • Select only the number of projects you can complete. You may want to take only 1 or 2 projects in your first year of 4-H.
