State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest

Date:  September 5, 2009
Location: Blackfoot, ID-Eastern Idaho Fair

There are 3 divisions in which youth can participate:
 
A-Division: Each county in the State of Idaho is entitled to send one A-division team to the contest. Members of these teams must be at least 14 years of age on January 1 of the current year.  The A-division winning team of this contest will qualify to attend the Western National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest to be held in January, 2010 in Denver, Colorado.

B-Division: Counties from the Eastern District (those who are eligible to participate in the Eastern Idaho State Fair) may also send one B-division team. Members of the B-division teams must be 13 years of age and under on January 1st of the current year. Teams made up of youth of mixed ages may enter either A-division or C-Division.

C-Division: Members of any age in 4-H may enter this division. If teams want to participate without any intention of attending the Western National 4-H Contest, they may enter the C-division and complete only one reasons class in the species of their choice.

BLM and University of Idaho 4-H Youth Development Weanling Wild Horse Training Program

The Bureau of Land Management and the University of Idaho 4-H Youth Development are partnering to offer an educational opportunity and fundraiser for Idaho 4-H Horse clubs.  BLM will be gathering wild horses from the Challis herd and would like the help of 4-H'ers to gentle and train the weanlings (ages 3 months to 6 months).  In exchange for the clubs work with the animals, the BLM will donate any adoption revenue (over $25 adoption fee) from the auction of the horse to the 4-H club.

Applicants must complete 3 documents-the Weanling Wild Horse Training Program Application, BLM Wild Horse Adoption Application, and the 4-H Youth Development Waiver of Liability form to be eligible.  Applications are due July 15, 2009.

COOL Lesson

Designed to be used with youths, parents, volunteers, and market animal sale committees, this short 15 to 30 minute lesson and handout gives basic information about what COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) is and how it affects those stakeholders involved in 4-H/FFA.

Southern Idaho Livestock Judging Camp
-July 14-16, 2009
This camp focuses on livestock evaluation with an emphasis on oral reasons. Livestock classes to be offered will include Market and Breeding Beef, Sheep and Swine. Primary target for the camp is youth ages 13 to 18.

Intermountain Livestock Judges School
- May 14-16, 2009
Geared to interested leaders, parents, producers and livestock enthusiasts, the training will give hands-on education in livestock selection and evaluation. The training in 2009 will cover beef and swine, with a special focus on sheep and meat goats.
